Post subject: How to make new friends abroad?
PostPosted: Fri, 11 Aug 2006 07:07:57 +0000
Hi everyone,
Well here's the problem...my girlfriend and I are currently studying abroad in Mexico and we've been here about a month. We live in an apartment complex with about 10 other international students...from France, Germany, Switzerland (We are from the U.S.). We are having a hard time making friends with all of these people and those that we meet on campus. We make sure to say hi and talk with them and almost always accept their offers to go places (movies, clubbing, etc) but these were weeks ago and we have no been invited anywhere since. It seems that the French tend to hang out with the French, the Germans with the Germans....but when plans are made my girlfriend and I seem to be the only ones left out. Does being a couple make us somehow...hard to approach? Yes we do have each other to hang out with and do things, but we want to make new friends and do things with them as well. Any ideas? Thank you!

Methos83,

It can be hard sometimes to make friends and so here are few pointers:
1 - Organize a party at your apartment and be sure to invite the students that live in your apartment, it can be a great ice breaker!
2 - If you are a sports player then try and join a club as that is a great way to meet other like minded people. Either you can join your university club or a local club

Sometimes if there are a large group of one nationality you might find then tend to stick together - but be approachable and you will find they will be very welcoming!

I hope this helps!

 Post subject: start a podcast!

Start a podcast, blog, or videoblog, and invite your soon-to-be-friends to participate. You're all starting an adventure together, and what better way to ping them than to have them on your show?

Also go pick up a copy of Keith Ferrazzi's landmark book, Never Eat Alone. Good stuff!
